The study was performed to evaluate the fracture toughness of dental alumina-glass
composites. Alumina compacts were prepared by press 150kg/cm2 and
sintering at 1100¡É for 2hrs. Dense composites were made by infiltrating partially
sintered alumina with four different borosilicate glasses containing 1, 3, 6, 9 mol%
Yttria(Y2O3) at 1200¡É for 6hrs. Apparent porosity was
measured by the KS L 3114 principle method. Fracture toughness was measured by a
single edge V-notched beam(SEVNB) method with a 2.5¡¿5¡¿20 mm rectangular bar.
Fracture toughness values were about ¡4.72 MPa¤ým1/2. Porosity rates of
alumina-glass composites were about 0.2%. The fracture surface of the alumina-glass
composites showed a Palmqvist crack pattern at the fracture origin and indicated a
tendency of toughening by the frictional interlocking between the microstructurally rough
fracture surfaces.
